I am defining visible pregnancy as from the time of the quickening to childbirth, and so it is the longest part of the various stages of pregnancy. As medieval women could be pregnant for decades at a time, their visibly pregnant bodies were common sights, not to mention they experienced the physical changes to their bodies because of pregnancy directly. Even women who suffered many miscarriages still embodied pregnancy in visible ways, and so this is an important stage of reproduction regardless if a woman is pregnant only for a few months or for up to a couple of decades.
